This course provides the skills and concepts required to develop professional-quality illustrations and photo manipulations. The focus of the course will be on both technical and aesthetic issues, and the relationship of image manipulation to different graphic design formats..
For this assignment, I was learning about the gothic art and its font (also known as the Blackletter) founded in 12th century. Used predominately in churches served as primarily religious and architectural purposes, aiming to inspire awe and teach scripture, Gothic font was a written counterpart that communicated through manuscripts and printed works, famously used in Gutenberg’s Bible. I looked into different styles and picked the style that I was most interested in writing. Sketched in notebook and then translated into illustrator to trace.
The Renaissance was the cultural rebirth of humanism, classical revival, and the flourishing of art, science and its typography. The types of that time was inspired by the classical Roman inscriptions and manuscripts and calligraphy, hence where the term "italic" was is a slanted, light-bodied typeface used for emphasis, foreign words, and titles, and it originated in 15th-century Venice, Italy. The tools I used is pen tool, shape tool, anchor and direct selection tool.
For this assignment, I focused on fonts tied to the Pre-Raphaelite period, choosing Gothic-serif styles because of their connection to medieval stories and aesthetics. The Pre-Raphaelites revived medieval themes in art, and this font—with its sharp serifs and ornamental curves—echoes the manuscripts and architecture they admired, making it a fitting visual counterpart to their vision. The tools I used were shape tools (circles and squares) curvature tool to add points, anchor points, and direct selection to manipulate shapes into letters.
For this project, I focused on understand the Art Deco period, which focused on symmetrical, straight lines, with emphasis on luxury and eclectics feel, compared to a more organic, curvature, and fantasy typeface of Art Nouveau. The tools I used is pen tool, shape tool, anchor and direct selection tool and later decorated the page to give a luxury view.
For the this assignment, I looked into the Bauhaus art movement for the next font tracing. I learned as a movement originating in Germany in the early 20th century, the Bauhaus movement emphasized the unity of art, craft, and technology, with emphasize on functionality, simplicity, and clarity through geometric forms and industrial aesthetics. As a font, it has sans-serif with clean, geometric, and symmetrical letterforms composed of simple shapes like circles and lines. Used the shapes and shape tool, pen, curvature and direct selection tool.
I created the typeface using the Ellipse Tool to form each letter from repeated dots. I duplicated, aligned, and adjusted spacing on a consistent grid. Then I traced and refined the letterforms. I used the Line Segment Tool to label typographic anatomy and organized everything into a clear visual presentation.
For this project, I researched the history and anatomy of Superscript, tracing its origins from handwritten manuscripts to modern typography. I designed a poster in Illustrator labeling key typeface parts and showing examples like x² + y² = z². The layout combines historical detail with contemporary design, highlighting how superscripts enhance hierarchy, readability, and elegance in text composition. I used the shape tool, line tool, and pen tool to create the typeface to Le Jeune Font and then highlight type anatomy terminology of the term superscript.
For this assignment, I researched about the Baskerville font and its characteristics. I then drew on photoshop and moved it to illustrator. Where I made the page design template and used a mix of pen tool (curvature and selection tool), shape tool, and some times shape builder. I then created outline the characteristics of the font.
